When acid from your stomach comes up it can hit your voice box leading to laryngopharyngeal reflux (aka silent reflux or LPR).

Symptoms of LPR include phlegm, cough, change in voice and/or a feeling like there is a lump in your throat. If you have any such issues, schedule an appointment with us today.

Long Beach ENT ready for Long Beach’s ear nose and throat summer challenges

Ah, summer is here and there is no better place to be than by the beach in Long Beach, NY. But the arrival of summer brings some unique ear, nose and throat challenges. Here are a few things you can do to have fun on the beaches and stay healthy:
Summer is the #1 season for outer ear infections. Otitis externa (outer ear infections) occur when water stays in the ear canal creating a breeding ground for bacteria and fungus.

Keep your ears dry. Use silicone earplugs when at the beach or in the pool.
Blow dry your ears after you swim.

What to watch out for:
If you experience severe ear itching or if you have drainage from your ear, you may have an outer ear infection. See an ENT specialist as soon as possible. At Evergreen ENT in Long Beach we are ready to help you stay on track to enjoy a fantastic Long Island summer!

Black mold, sinus disease and the E.N.T. specialist

As efforts continue to rebuild on the South Shore of Long Island, many residents of Long Beach, Oceanside and Island Park are asking me about issues regarding mold exposure. After hurricane Sandy, numerous home and business were flooded. In wet environments, mold can build up and thrive. The problem is that it can grown behind walls, near the foundation and in other areas that are difficult to detect. Some mold emits an odor but other types less so, thus relying on “smelling” mold is not advisable.

I am telling my Long Beach, Island Park and Oceanside residents that mold is an irritant to the nose. It leads to nasal congestion and this can then lead to sinus disease. If their immune system is normal, mold usually does not grow in the nose. So use nasal saline several times a day and make an appointment to see an ear, nose and throat doctor if you continue to experience symptoms.

Sneezing? Allergies are here in Long Beach, NY and Garden City as well as all over Long Island.

Have you noticed the sudden uptick in allergies over the past 2 weeks? In Long Beach and in Garden City, NY the allergy situation has really been quite remarkable. In fact, there were so many airborne allergy particles last week that I could not find my car as it was completely covered in pollen. So aside from just “living” with sneezing fits and nasal congestion what is someone to do? Here are a few tips to keep you on track during the allergy season.
1. Try to limit outdoor exposure if you have severe allergies
2. Seek medical treatment/guidance from an ENT specialist
3. Use your prescribed medical nasal sprays on a regular basis
4. Make nasal saline your new best friend. By constantly spraying your nose with saline, you will rinse out the allergens before they cause excess congestion.

Remember, make an appointment with an ear, nose and throat specialist if you have allergies. I have been happy to help numerous patients in the Long Beach, NY and Garden City, NY areas to lead happier and healthier lives. Here is to a wonderful spring/summer!

The Magic of In-Office Sinus Procedures – Sinus Problems can be overcome.

The last time I experienced a sinus infection, it felt like someone opened up my head and poured concrete in there. Needless to say, it was not a fun experience. Now, I have the privilege to care for patients who suffer from such sinus problems and alleviate their suffering.

Balloon sinuplasty is an in-office procedure for patients with recurrent sinus problems or for patients with one episode of prolonged sinus congestion/infection. It can be done in the office and takes about 2 hours. The procedure involves numbing the nose and using tiny balloons to perform a minimally invasive procedure to open up the clogged sinus drainage passageways.

Here is what my last patient had to say about the procedure:
“Dr. Shah, I am a changed person because of the balloon sinus procedure. I can sleep at night and I feel fantastic. I have more energy and I have not had ONE sinus infection since the procedure. Thank you so much.”

Ear, Nose and Throat Doctors and Sinus Infections

Spring seems to FINALLY be here in the Northeast. After an unseasonable cold April, flowers are beginning to bloom and pollen can be spotted on cars and sidewalks. Remember as the weather improves, so will the allergen count. Here are a few things you can do to help you enjoy the spring.

1. Remember that colds last no longer than 7 days. The old adage that a cold takes to 2 days to come, 3 days to stay and 2 days to resolve hold true.
2. If you continue to have “cold-like” symptoms after 7 days, you may have a sinus infection. See an ear, nose and throat specialist as soon as possible.
3. Steam inhalation along with eucalyptus drops can help ease the congestion in your face.

Remember E.N.T.’s are specialists for the nose. We are here to help. Now get out there and throw the baseball, toss a frisbee and grill some veggies!
